(Creating Video Game Narratives)
Creating Video Game Narratives Fairytale Tropes and Motifs
Games give you control over a character and his or her actions and they allow you to experience a story as an active participant and to engage in cooperative play. If we look back, collaborative, interactive storytelling has already played a significant role in human history. Within that history, the fairy tale stands out as having the longest reach–surviving numerous incarnations, translations, and renderings.
Explore gameplay and game design in video games with fairy tale- narratives. While there is constant innovation in the ways that we can interact with these tales, the base need for interactive, collaborative, and responsive play is rooted in the oral tradition of storytelling. And that in fact, narrative-driven games are ushering in a contemporary revival and adaptation of the oral storytelling tradition–reintroducing a more connected experience to story. Look at texts concerning the oral tradition of fairy tales and studies concerning our need for the interactive and collaborative sharing of stories in video games.Learn about storyboarding and video game design terminology and discuss how the success of storytelling in video games hinges on how certain aspects of scripting, visual presentation, and interaction align. The course focuses on the art of game design, rules of gameplay, and gaming industry reviews on the current growth of narrative/story driven games examining new games in detail.

As an educator, I aim to guide students in developing a positive self-image and to help them build the confidence to reach their full potential. I have taught in institutions that follow Ivy standards in pedagogy, like the Harkness method. In teaching, I work with students, individually and/or collectively, to create a space where they can strengthen critical thinking skills and gain the self-confidence to ask questions and voice thoughts and ideas–with forethought and trust in their reasoning.
